  34.         very erratic. The islands suffer prolonged droughts, harmattan winds, 
  35.         volcanic and seismic activity. Cape Verde serves as an important 
  36.         communications station and sea/air refueling site. Became independent 
  37.         5 July, 1975. Member of UN since 1975.
